podium: ALE and the Zombie Apocalypse

Automatic Link Establishment and Ham radio in emergency communications

Aoplogo

Lecture about the origins and the role of amateur radio in emergency situations, explaining the idea and theory behind the Automatic Link Establishment and talking about the experiences of Zrenjanin amateur radio club with implementing it in practice.

We will start with a short intro to the amateur radio movement and its philosophy.
What is it, where it originates from, how it is connected to hacking philosophy and why it is still relevant as a source of new ideas?

Then we will consider communication in a scenario where all traditional means of communication are unavailable, this could be in an event of natural disasters, war or ... why not ... the Zombie Apocalypse ;)
After analysing the problems we face in emergency situation scenarios we will introduce Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) as the de-facto standard for emergency communications worldwide.

Just a sip of theory behind it, then moving on to our own experiences with ALE, setting up the pilot station in city of Zrenjanin and plans for the future.

As a demonstration we plan to present the making the ALE connection from conference room using HF radio station and a laptop computer.
