The Technology and Hardware of Particle Accelerators

03_

An entertaining talk about the purpose and workings of particle accelerators: How are they useful to physics, what technology is used, how are they operated? Physics, electronics and data processing are presented in a way that should be easy to understand for everyone.

The LHC particle accelerator is like a popstar for science and technology: It's become widely known as one of the most complex machines of humanity, and it plays an enormously important role for modern physics.

The machine has interesting details to offer for everybody that's interested in technology: It consumes an enormous amount of power, it generates large magnetic fields, its experiments produce enormous amounts of data and its results are stored in one of the largest "clouds" on earth, holding dozens of petabytes.

This talk will explain something about how the machine works and why it is run, but also take care of the hackers' and makers' heart, telling stories about the construction of the machine and the technical difficulties involed.
